Hiker Dies After Picking Up Rattlesnake In State Park

A hiker in Tennessee died after picking up a rattlesnake on a trail in Savage Gulf State Park. The unidentified man was bitten on the hand by what was believed to be a Timber rattlesnake and could not be saved by first responders. While venomous snake bites are relatively common, with 7,000 to 8,000 reported annually, fatal incidents are rare, claiming only about five lives per year. Experts advise hikers to remain calm and avoid handling snakes, and to seek immediate medical attention if bitten. (Newser)
