Oregon Woman Rescues Beached Shark By Dragging It Back To The Ocean

Colleen Dunn saved a stranded shark while walking her dogs at sunset on Manzanita beach near Nehalem Bay State Park. Dunn spotted what appeared to be driftwood moving on the sand about 15 feet ahead. She initially thought it might be a seal pup but realized it was a shark upon closer inspection. “I had seen enough Shark Week to know to grab — if you can grab them by the tail, they can’t reach back and bite you,” Dunn told KGW-TV. She first dragged the shark to a tide pool, but the water wasn’t deep enough to cover its gills. Dunn then grabbed it again and threw it into the waves where it swam away. Oregon State University shark expert Taylor Chapple identified the fish as a juvenile salmon shark that likely experienced “cold shock” in cooler waters. “I just can’t be the one to allow something to die on my watch,” Dunn told The Oregonian.
