Sinking Island Residents Relocate
300 families are moving from the Caribbean island of Gardi Sugdub to more solid ground. Due to rising sea levels, the tide now comes into residents’ homes. “We’re a little sad, because we’re going to leave behind the homes we’ve known all our lives,” Nadín Morales said. “But the sea is sinking the island little by little.” While the families have tried to reinforce the island’s edges, the water levels continue to rise. Some people have decided to stay until it is no longer safe. The Panamanian government has developed a site for families that is just an eight-minute boat ride away from the island, so they can return to fish. This is the first community along Panama’s coasts that is expected to relocate in the coming years. (newser)
