Surgeon Gets Jail Time After Amputation Of Own Legs
A former NHS surgeon received a two-year, eight-month prison sentence for insurance fraud and possessing extreme pornography. Neil Hopper, 49, from Truro, Cornwall, deliberately froze his legs with ice and dry ice in 2019, forcing their amputation. He then falsely claimed the injuries resulted from sepsis to collect over $625.000 from two insurance companies. Prosecutor Nicholas Lee told Truro Crown Court that Hopper had a “sexual interest in amputation” and messaged friends he should “milk it” regarding the claims. Judge James Adkin said Hopper showed remorse but noted the “exceptionally high” harm level in body mutilation videos he possessed. The Royal Cornwall Hospitals NHS Trust confirmed comprehensive reviews found “no evidence whatsoever to indicate any risk or harm to patients” during Hopper’s employment from 2013 to 2023.
