Tourist Returns ‘Bad Luck’ Volcanic Stones He Stole After They Brought ‘Major Personal Tragedy’
A German visitor returned volcanic stones he stole from Spain’s Timanfaya National Park after experiencing what he called “bad luck.” The tourist sent a handwritten letter to park officials explaining his decision to return the rocks from the Montañas del Fuego area. “I have heard of legends where the removal of volcanic rock from its source of origin brings bad luck and I fear this has befallen me,” the man wrote. He continued, “After a major personal tragedy I feel compelled to return this few grams of rock to Fire Mountain.” The visitor asked officials to scatter the stones at the “hot coals” spot where he originally took them. Park authorities warn that removing rocks can result in fines up to $3,400 and creates a “dangerous domino effect” by harming local ecosystems that depend on the stones for shelter and soil stability.
