Icy road causes accident on Signal Mountain

SIGNAL MOUNTAIN, Tenn. (WDEF) — After several different accidents, auto repair shop managers say there are ways to drive safely in winter weather.

Part of Stratford Way in Signal Mountain was closed on Tuesday morning, because a car slid off the road.

Police say this happened because of the icy conditions. No one was injured.

Over at Midas on Market Street in Chattanooga, manager Angela Johnson says there are ways to prepare your car for winter weather.

“It is almost always going to be in the tires. You want to double check you air pressure, especially at night when it gets colder and warmer in the days the air pressure will fluctuate. So you want to make sure your air pressure is proper and then you want to make sure the air tire tread is appropriate,” Johnson said.

She has some driving tips.

“You don’t want to brake in a turn that will cause skidding if there is black ice on the road,” Johnson said.

Because of the weather and road conditions, Hamilton County Schools were on a two hour delay the past two days.

“Some of our buses begin to run between five and six o’clock in the morning on a regular schedule. So running two hours later gives us a couple of hours to check roads and survey things,” said Tim Hensley, with the Hamilton County Department of Education.

Tuesday morning, some buses were going a little bit slower than they normally do.

“They just wanted to make sure that they were taking that extra time to be sure that they were safe and on the roads this morning,” Hensley said.

Back on Signal Mountain, this car was pulled out and towed away.
