Injured hunter airlifted from Cherokee wilderness

TELLICO PLAINS, Tennessee (WDEF) – Local and state teams helped rescue an injured hunter in the East Tennessee mountains on Thursday.

Monroe County Sheriff Tommy Jones reports that the hunter was about two miles into a remote section of the Cherokee National Forest above Tellico Plains.

It took a lot of help to locate, treat and then rescue the hunter.

The Monroe County Rescue Team along with fire fighters from Turkey Creek in North Carolina, Mt. Vernon and Tri-Community along with Monroe EMS and TEAM all pitched in.

A Tennessee National Guard helicopter ended up lifting the hunter out and taking him to the hospital.
