Inmate stabbed in fight at St. Clair Correctional Facility

SPRINGVILLE, Ala. (AP) – Alabama prison officials are investigating an inmate stabbing at the St. Clair Correctional Facility northeast of Birmingham.

Department spokesman Bob Horton says an inmate was stabbed during a fight in a housing unit Saturday afternoon at the prison in Springville.

Horton says the inmate was treated for non-life threatening injuries, and a Correctional Emergency Response Team is helping to search the facility for contraband.

Horton says the housing unit where the stabbing occurred is on lockdown during the investigation.

The stabbing came less than two weeks after a guard at the same facility was stabbed by an inmate. Authorities have said the guard also suffered non-life threatening injuries.

Inmate uprisings have occurred recently at another major prison, Holman, located in southwest Alabama.
