Intersection temporarily closed in Dalton due to storm damage
UPDATE:
The City of Dalton says their road crews have since repaired the damage.
“The road crew that was there on the scene already, they were speculating that it might have been a lightning strike. Since then, there’s been some more speculation that it might have been caused by a water leak in that area, possibly part of the storm,” said Bruce Frazier, communication director for the city of Dalton. “I’m not sure what caused the damage, but I do know the public works department was able to get the damaged patched pretty quickly. Within two hours they had that section roadway back open. ”
DALTON, Ga. (WDEF) — Wednesday’s storms left road damage in Dalton, but road crews aren’t exactly sure about the cause.
The City of Dalton has temporarily closed the intersection of Waugh Street and N. Boundary Street.
An eastbound lane of Waugh Street is closed as well.
The closure is because of damaged pavement.
Crews say this could be caused by a lightning strike or even a water leak during the storm. The community reported hearing at least one loud clap of thunder near downtown Dalton during the storm. They think lightning could have caused the damage, because two large chunks of asphalt were missing from the road.
The Dalton Public Works Department is working to patch holes in the road until they can make a permanent repair.
Officials expected the road to be reopened within a few hours.
Updates will be provided as they are made available.
