IRONMAN Chattanooga gets longer this year

By adding four miles, this will be the longest bike course in the world

CHATTANOOGA (WDEF) – This year’s IRONMAN competition will be even more challenging than ever.

Organizers say they are adding four more miles to the bike race, making it the longest course in the world.

The course starts at the Riverfront, goes through town, then a pair of 47-mile loops through north Georgia.

The route this year will take them through Chickamauga.

The bike portion is now 116 miles and scheduled to take about five hours.

But that’s only the long part of the IRONMAN.

The race starts with a 2.4 mile swim down the Tennessee River from the Riverwalk to Ross’s Landing.

And after the bike ride, competitors will cap it off with a 26 mile run back downtown.

That course takes them across the bridges to Riverview and back, up Amnicola Highway with a finish back at Ross’s Landing.

This year’s IRONMAN is on September 24th.
