Is April First too early to plant flowers outdoors?

We ask a nursery owner in Hixson

CHATTANOOGA (WDEF) – Today is the first day of April, and as we move into Spring, some of us might be thinking about doing a little gardening.

It is a little early to start planting flowers outdoors, though.

According to Ray Painter at the Green Thumb in Hixson, the Tennessee Valley usual experiences its last frost in the mid-April.

Until then, stick to putting down sod and preparing for warmer weather and keep your flowers indoors.

“And until we get to fifty degrees at night and consistently somewhere around fifty degrees, it’s probably best not to plant outdoors unless you have the ability to carry them in from time to time or cover them somehow to protect them.”

It might be too early to plant flowers, but Painter said that it is a good time to plant trees and shrubs.

Additionally, you can get to work in the garden by planting early-season vegetables such as broccoli and lettuce.
