James Best Dies At the Age of 88
Best appeared in 83 movies and more than 600 TV shows.
The movies include The Caine Mutiny with Humphrey Bogart, Shenandoah with Jimmy Stewart and Hooper with Burt Reynolds.
He ofter played a heavy in westerns and science fiction movies and TV shows.
Those roles landed him on Alfred Hitchcock Presents and two episodes of the Andy Griffith Show.
But his career defining role came when he traded in drama for comedy by playing the bumbling sheriff Roscoe P. Coltrane on The Dukes of Hazzard.
The show ran from 1979-1985 and made him a star nationwide.

Best moved to North Carolina in 2006 and continued to act in local theater.
And he landed a role in the upcoming movie Old Soldiers.
