Jason Fitzgerald Hoping to Make Sale Creek Legitimate Playoff Contender
Sale Creek has made the state playoffs the last five years in-a-row.
And yet, the school has never had a winning record in ten seasons of football.
It’s a crazy deal to say the least, and new head coach Jason Fitzgerald hopes to change that.
He wants to make the Panthers a legitimate playoff contender.
Sale Creek has the 30-in-30 spotlight.
Since Jason Fitzgerald arrived at Sale Creek, he has been keepin’ it real.
Said lineman Gabriel Womack:”Well I’ve noticed that we have been a lot more excited since Coach Fitzgerald has got here, and it’s never really been a dull day out here. When the sun is shining, we are always getting out here and getting ready to hit.”
The Panthers roster numbers are a hit with Coach Fitz.
41 kids. Not bad for a 1A school.
Said Fitzgerald:”Some 1A schools you get down in the twenties, and you may have to change a little bit. But if we keep the numbers over forty, that’s a good number. We are able to work all the kids. We’ll work three groups, and get everybody in there and get some reps. It has worked out really good with the numbers we have right now.”
Sale Creek also has the luxury of 15 seniors, who could help make school history.
Said Fitzgerald:”We talked about this big senior class, and I just told them what’s your legacy going to be when you leave here. You going to be the first team to have that winning season. You going to be the first team to win that playoff game. You going to be the first team to host that playoff game. What are you going to be?”
Said Womack:”If we go out and show people we are not just the same old Sale Creek and go, we are different, then we’ve got a chance of winning. What people say we used to do when we got hit in the mouth, that we would just give up. What we’ve really done is say when we get hit in the mouth, we are going to hit back. We are not going to slide down from contact. We are going to hit you back even harder.”
Said Fitzgerald:”You’ve got to be able to play hard every play, and you’ve got to be a physical football team. That’s what we are trying to instill right now is to play hard and be physical.”
