Jury Duty Scam in Whitfield County

Whitfield County, Georgia (WDEF)- The Dalton Police Department reports of a scam going on in Whitfield County.

A scammer is calling residents claiming to be from the Whitfield County Sheriff’s Office, stating that the resident has missed jury duty and must pay a fine in order to avoid going to jail.

Dalton Police issued a press release that quotes in part,

While it’s possible for a warrant to be issued if a citizen fails to answer a jury summons, the court would first seek to resolve the matter in a different way. That communication would also not take place over the phone. And finally, representatives from law enforcement do not demand money over the phone. If someone calls you claiming to be a law enforcement officer demanding money, please hang up and contact police. The non-emergency number for the 911 dispatch center is 706-370-4900.”
