Jury Duty Scammers in The Tennessee Valley
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (WDEF)- A new scam is making its way into many homes in the Tennessee Valley.
It’s called the jury scam, where an unknown individual will call you and ask for you to pay a fine saying you missed your court date.
Catoosa County lawyer McCraken Poston along with county employees have been getting calls about unidentified individuals posing as cops.
One of them would request a meeting to either receive cash or ask for payment gift cards.
McCraken Poston stated, “He said his name was officer Posey and that she had missed jury duty and that they were either going to put her in jail or collect 300 dollar fine, which is a fine that is on the Jury summons so it had some legitimacy to it.”
Tracy Brown says, “We would never contact you by phone unless we are canceling the jury duty, so we will never be contacting you by phone to say you missed the court date or anything like that.”
“I want people to warn their mother and grandmothers and fathers and grand fathers because that generation especially thinks very much about it’s duty as jurors and I think they would especially be vulnerable if they felt like they had missed that important duty,” said Poston.
Catoosa County officials want to remind everyone that if you don’t receive an official summons, then it’s probably a scam.
