Knoxville officer accused of part in drug ring

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) – A Knoxville police officer is among seven people charged with taking part in a prescription drug ring.

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation said at a news conference Wednesday that 38-year-old Joshua Hurst faces charges of conspiracy to possess with intent to deliver painkillers in a drug-free zone and other drug charges, official misconduct and possession of a firearm during commission of a dangerous felony.

The TBI alleges the case included sales in a school zone.

Knoxville Police Chief David Rausch asked for the TBI’s assistance in investigating. Rausch said at a news conference Wednesday he apologizes to the community for the officer’s alleged involvement and will work to regain the people’s trust.

Hurst twice was recognized by the department for good work, in 2007 and 2014.
