Lafayette Road Closing
The Chickamauga and Chattanooga Military Park is beginning a resurfacing project that will last all the way through June, and despite what you may have heard, the whole road will not be closed.
Kim Coons Chief of interpretation said, "The entire road will not be closed at one specific time where it is all closed, no."
The road will be getting a new river rock surface and sections of the road will be worked on, but detours will be posted and flaggers will be positioned.
Tourists may experience a few delays but not much.
Ft. Oglethorpe City Manager Ron Goulart said, "It may cause some slight delays for the tourists, but they are going to provide for alternate parking and handicap parking, so there will be a slight interruption but not much."
"Visitors will be impacted because the route won’t be the traditional tour route but we have it re routed," said Coons.
The project will give the road a more rustic look and highlight the importance of the road to the battle.
Coons went on to say, "The Lafayette Road is vital to the story of the battle, because they were fighting over that particular road."
