Legendary Football Coach Gary Rankin Introduced at Boyd Buchanan
Chattanooga-(WDEF-TV) The winningest high school football coach in Tennessee history will be on the sidelines for Boyd Buchanan next season. Gary Rankin was introduced as the Bucs new coach on Monday. He left his power-house program at Alcoa to be closer to family in Chattanooga.
Sometimes the reasons for change can be small. For Gary Rankin. It was a grand child in the Scenic City.
Said Rankin:”I told somebody a couple of weeks ago that 8 pound, 2-ounce had a lot of pull. They said I didn’t know you were a fisherman. I said no, it’s a grand baby.”
Rankin reels in state titles like fish. 17 overall. But he’s not resting on his resume.
Said Rankin:”After we had won the 17th state championship. I guess it was the next day. Somebody told me to take the trash out, and I said I just won my 17th state championship. I’m done with that. She said make sure you get what’s in the bathroom too.” (laughter)
So what makes Rankin so successful?
Said Rankin:”We’ve had good players. Had good support. Good administration. I’ve been fortunate I’ve been able to hold onto coaches. Lot of continuity on our staffs and been in communities where football is important. You can win football games, and we’ve done it at Alcoa. I think one thing that was misleading up there. They though we rolled the ball out a lot of times with just beat people. There were years we won the state championship and didn’t have a single kid sign a scholarship.”
Now Rankin plans to map out a winner at Boyd Buchanan.
Said Rankin:”But a lot of times when you take over a program, you have to talk about building it and getting something done in the next three to four years. We don’t have three to four years. We’ve got five months. I expect to win. I expect to win this year. I expect to win in the playoffs this year. That’s the way we’re going to look at it.”
