Lizzo protests TN drag bill at Knoxville concert
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (WDEF)– At ‘Volapalooza’ in Knoxville, Tennessee Friday night, musical artist, Lizzo, made a point against the state legislation’s recent decision to restrict drag performances in public.
The artist invited a number of well known drag performers to join her on stage.
Lizzo said, “Why would I not create a safe space in Tennessee where we can celebrate drag entertainers and celebrate our differences?”
While performing at Thompson-Boling Arena, Lizzo posted videos on Instagram from the show, including comments to the crowd that referenced the pending law.
Lizzo explains, “I was told by people on the internet, ‘Cancel your shows in Tennessee,’ ‘Don’t go to Tennessee,'”
The artist continues, “Their reason was valid, but why would I not come to the people who need to hear this message the most?”
Back in February, Governor Bill Lee signed the legislation against “adult cabaret” in public or in front of minors.
A judge temporarily blocked the law in March, saying it was too vaguely written.
