Local Agencies Mark National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (WDEF) — Several folks properly disposed of their unused and unwanted medication today.

Many drug disposal sites were open across Hamilton and Bradley counties, like this one in Northshore.

The free event is part of the National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day effort.

This site gave residents an opportunity to shred their documents too.

David Crutcher helping out with the Hamilton County Coalition says they typically gather about seven to 12 pounds of medication during these events.

He was out there along with Drug Enforcement Agency Officers.

“Trying to keep drugs out of, being abused by people.  When they’re taken back this way and given back they’re not as apt to be utilized in the home for improper purposes,” said Crutcher.

John McGarry  is the Drug Enforcement Agency Resident Agent in Charge. He said, “And just for the safety of especially the young folks, take them out of those homes and bring them to us to incinerate and we do so responsibly at a EPA certified facility.”

Local residents like Pam Hollowell dropped off items.

“It’s a nice thing to have the shredding.  The drugs, the getting rid of drugs and getting them out of the waste system, the water system is just, I think is awesome.” said Hollowell.

If you missed today’s event, you can also contact your local law enforcement agency to see if you can drop off unwanted medication there as well.
