Local Church Honors Korean War, World War II Veterans

Decades after their service, the memories still hit two close to home for veterans Dewey Hensley and Perry Davis.
"It’s rough I’ll tell you. When I first went up there, I went through a mine field with boys stepping on mines, and blowing their feet off, and killing them, and throwing them shells. We’d hit the ground.  It was rough," remembered Hensley.
"It’s something that I will never forget ’til the day I die, because it was just an experience. One that I hope I never have to deal with again," added Davis.
The congregation at Lupton Drive Baptist Church took time to honor their heroes, Davis, who served in the Korean War.
"Private Davis fearlessly and with disregard for his own personal safety charged forward through devastating enemy fire."
"I joined 27 days before I was 17, because I knew they were going to Camp Lejeune, North Carolina for training to join the reserve. After I was old enough, I told them that I was 27 days too early."
And Hensley, who was wounded in the line of duty during World War II.
"I laid behind this apple tree, and there was snipers up in this pine thicket, and they started shooting at us. One guy said ‘are you hit?’ ‘I said no not yet, and after that I said, ‘yeah, I am now.’ One of them went through through the apple tree and hit my shoulder. The doctor said when he took that bullet out he said I wouldn’t of had a shoulder if it didn’t go through something or other."
Both men know they are fortunate to still be here…to tell their stories for another generation to learn from….
"It’s something that I will never forget til the day I die because it was just an experience, one that I hope I never have to deal with again. I love my country, and it’s been more than good to me," said Davis.
