Summer Heat Can Turn Dangerous Fast
Chattanooga, TN (WDEF) – The sun isn’t just shining—it’s scorching. And what might feel like a typical summer day can quickly turn dangerous.
Local health experts are urging everyone to recognize the warning signs of heat-related illness before it’s too late.
Dr. Lindsay Bass, Pediatric Injury Prevention Coordinator at Children’s Hospital at Erlanger, says heat exhaustion can become serious in a matter of moments.
“Heat exhaustion can absolutely be dangerous, and it can develop into heat stroke,” Bass explains. “That’s why it’s so important to act on those early symptoms—like a racing heart or feeling lightheaded. We all have a sense of when our body feels too hot. The key is listening to that.”
When it comes to prevention, Bass says simple steps make a big difference.
“First, wear light, cool clothing. Most people avoid thick layers in the heat, but it’s especially important for young kids and babies—we often overdress them without realizing it,” she says. “Staying hydrated is absolutely key—even if you’re not doing anything strenuous or don’t feel thirsty. Water and drinks with electrolytes, like Gatorade, are great options.”
Whether you’re commuting to work, walking your dog, or simply enjoying the season, doctors say it’s important to be mindful. The summer sun can be fun—but only if you take precautions to stay safe.
