Local first responders deploy to South Carolina flooding

Chattanooga, TN (WDEF) – Tennessee first-responders are stepping up to help people in South Carolina during this historic flood.

Last week more than 80 people from different agencies across the state were put into nine swift water rescue teams. These agencies have been deployed as a part of the Tennessee Fire Chiefs Association, State Fire Marshal’s Office and Emergency Management Agency’s statewide mutual aid system.

Members from the Bradley County Fire Rescue, and one member of the Chattanooga Fire Department are already there now.

"We’re really proud of our people and what they’re doing," said mutual aid coordinator, Eddie Phillips, "The feedback we’re getting from South Carolina is they’re really making a difference, they’re really saving a lot of lives and it’s important."

Today new teams will be sent out to relieve the teams there now, which Phillips said is their largest deployment of first-responders out of state since Katrina.
