Local man’s uncle honored in new Netflix docu-series about Medal of Honor recipient

HIXSON, Tenn. (WDEF) – In honor of Veterans’ Day, a Medal of Honor recipient will be featured on a Netflix documentary series.

Sgt. Sylvester Antolak is being highlighted because gave the ultimate sacrifice during World War II. His story is one of many being featured internationally on a series called ‘Medal of Honor.

He lost his life in battle on May 24, 1944.

United States Army Sergeant Sylvester Antolak posthumously received the Medal of Honor.

Sergeant Antolak joined the army in July 1941.

His nephew, Robert Sylvester Antolak, says his father named him after his uncle and he believes it a great honor to carry that name.

Robert Antolak says that Sylvester Antolak was “pinned down by heavy enemy fire in a field near Cisterna, Italy,” but he charged at the machine guns, getting hit 3 times, before being fatally wounded.

He is credited for saving countless lives.
