Local Pastors watch “Living Biblically” premiere, share thoughts on what it means to live by the Good Book
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (WDEF) – A new CBS series puts religion in the forefront, but this isn’t your average religious show.
It’s a comedy surrounding Christianity’s most sacred text.
The sitcom “Living Biblically” premiered Monday night.
The show follows film critic Chip.
After his friend dies, Chip decides to live his life “100 percent by the Bible.”
“I think the show is humorous in parts, but if you were to try to discern spiritual truths from it or help spiritually it would fall short,” Dallas Bay Baptist Pastor Ken Duggan said.
Ken Duggan, Shauna Wooten, and Steve Caudle are all local Pastors who have dedicated their lives sharing the meanings of biblical text to others.
News 12 asked them to sit down with reporter Dorothy Sherman to watch the show and share their thoughts.
“I thought the show was good as far as humor, but because the show being Biblically living I felt like because Jesus Christ wasn’t mentioned that it wasn’t a true picture of what Biblically living is, but it definitely, definitely can prompt dialogue,” Real Life Ministries Pastor Shauna Wooten said.
“I think it was pretty decent entertainment and not anything should be taken too seriously, can prompt some dialogue and that’s probably the most you’ll get out of it from a Christian stand point,” Greater Second Missionary Baptist Pastor Steve Caudle said.
In the show, Chip turns to a Catholic Priest for guidance on how to live by the rules or law of the Bible.
At one point in the show, Chip seeks advice on how he should handle a co-worker he found out was committing adultery.
Father Gene tells him, “The Bible says you’re supposed to stone adulterers, but of course you’re not going to be doing that in 2018, because of jail.”
Later in the show, Chip runs into his co-worker and quickly decides to pick up a rock and hit his co-worker in the head.
“The funny thing is when Moses was given the law on Mt. Sinai, before he got to the base of the mountain, the people were breaking all ten of the laws, and so they have never been kept and they’ve never made men righteous before God. So, I think it’s not really mocking (the Bible) it, but it is goes far short of the grace of the new testament that’s necessary for a person to have a personal relationship with God,” Pastor Duggan said.
While the show might not be entirely accurate in what it means to live Biblically, it does bring up the topic of religion that may lead to conversations about what it does mean to live Biblically.
“If one is to live Biblically they have to live a life of loving God and their brother,” Pastor Caudle said.
“To live Biblically is to exemplify who God is to be able to represent him. What he says in his word and to walk out his word,” Pastor Wooten said.
As for the Pastors, when asked if they’d watch the show again, two of them said they will because it gives an opportunity for dialogue.
And one said if he does it will be out of curiosity to see if Jesus is ever mentioned.
