Lookout Mountain Club Golf Course Open Again After Major Renovation
Lookout Mountain, GA-(WDEF-TV) The Lookout Mountain Club golf course has just re-opened after being closed a year for a major overhaul. This course opened in 1925, and it was renovated to honor the design of its originial architect, Seth Raynor.
Said Club General Manager Andrew Orbison:”I think the views have really taken off. It’s a whole different look now. We’ve taken down really over a thousand trees here on this course.”
Said Head Golf Pro Brian Anderson:”You know we are up here about 18-hundred feet elevation, and you can see for miles in pretty much any direction. Yeah you can see the clubhouse from just about every location on the golf course, which is pretty unique.”
Said Orbison:”Really wanted to uphold the history and what Seth Raynor was originally planning to do with this course.”
Said Anderson:”You know golden age architecture is something that a lot of people are fascinated with when you start talking about the likes of Seth Raynor, and was really ahead of their time bringing links golf to America, so it’s pretty unique.”
Said Orbison:”From you coming out here and seeing the bunker faces. They’re pretty tough. They’re very steep. They’re very Seth Raynor. These greens. The undulation of the greens. On number 3 we just called it the Sahara bunker, which was something that Raynor originally had in his plan, and we were able to bring that to life on this course.”
Reporer:”Describe the Sahara bunker.”
Said Orbison:”It was mainly supposed to be a waster bunker if you will, but it has four mounds and some sand bunker features behind it. Made to look like it was an old bunker that was washed up through time.”
Said Anderson:”It has attracted a lot of national attention. We’ve picked up a number of national memberships. My hope long term is to make a push for Golf Digest’s list of top 100 classic courses in the country. And you really just get this sense of man,
I’m out here in the middle of the mountains, and it’s just cool golf.”
