HAMILTON COUNTY, Tenn. (WDEF) — The Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency is planning to offer low-cost kayaking classes in May at 13 state parks.
The kayak training will take place on Saturday, May 20, from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. local time.
It will highlight the start of the 2023 National Safe Boating Week.
Classes will cost $15 per person, and guests can sign up online at tnstateparks.com.
Guests can visit any one of these Tennessee parks to participate:
- Harrison Bay State Park,
- Booker T. Washington State Park,
- Fall Creek Falls State Park,
- Meeman-Shelby Forest State Park,
- Chickasaw State Park,
- Harpeth River State Park,
- Long Hunter State Park,
- Seven Islands State Birding Park,
- Big Ridge State Park,
- Hiawassee/Ocoee Scenic River State Park,

In addition, Booker T. Washington is offering adaptive kayaking for those with physical disabilities.
In-person spaces are limited to 15 people and they have a limited number of kayaks, paddles and life jackets. However, the parks will offer a free online class as well.
Instructors are nationally certified volunteers, who can give paddling and rescue training. They will also be supported by experienced safety teams.
TWRA Wildlife officers will be on-scene to ensure guests are practicing paddle-craft safety.
The TWRA is teaming up with Tennessee State Parks and the Tennessee chapter of the American Canoe Association to make this event happen. 20 different organizations made donations, too.
“We want all Tennesseans to be safe while enjoying the state’s beautiful waterways,” TWRA Executive Director Jason Maxedon said. “We are excited to be joining this great partnership to highlight outdoor recreation opportunities and paddling safety skills.”
