Malachi Smith Enjoying Outstanding Season For Chattanooga Mocs

Chattanooga-(WDEF-TV) Chattanooga sits on top of the SoCon standings thanks in large part to the play of guard Malachi Smith. His twitter handle is Maliworld, and Malachi has certainly been all world for the Mocs this season.

Said Mocs head coach Lamont Paris:”I always say it. I’ll say it again. I’m just glad he’s on our team.”

No kidding. Malachi leads the SoCon in scoring at 21.5 points a game. He’s the only guy in the league averaging 20 points.

Reporter:”What are you feeding Malachi Smith?”

Said Paris:”Clearly all the things I never ate when I was his age. (chuckles) So I was on a different diet.”

Malachi’s diet is called hard work.

Said Smith:”Like I was talking to coach about this the other day. When I had to redshirt, I always loved just working and getting better, but when I wasn’t able to play, it just made me appreciate it so much more. Like it wasn’t a hassle. It wasn’t a hassle to get up and work and grind. Like it seemed like a job and I love it. Yeah I just love working. I think that’s just showing.”

Said Paris:”That dude is such a good kid and so committed to the game of basketball that it’s nice here and there to see the game reward him enough to keep him doing his thing.”

Malachi isn’t just a scorer. He’s top ten in the SoCon in rebounds and assists and steals.

Said Smith:”You know in high school I was on a great team, and we were always winning by so many points. It was never. That was never needed of me. Last year was kind of up and down with seven players here. Eight players here. My first time playing in 390 days. So this has most definitely been the best time of my career.”
