Man arrested at Scottsboro safety checkpoint for drug possession

SCOTTSBORO, Al. (WDEF) —  A Scottsboro man was arrested at a safety checkpoint after authorities found drugs on his person.

On June 23, 2025, at 11:00 p.m. officers with the Scottsboro Police Department (SPD) were conducting a safety checkpoint in the 2100 block of AL Highway 79.

During the checkpoint, officers stopped a vehicle driven by a Rachel Gatlin, with passenger Brandon Evers.

After Gatlin was unable to provide the requested documentation, officers instructed her to pull onto the shoulder of the roadway.

SPD said the two were asked to step out of the vehicle, and Evers gave officers permission to search him.

During the search, officers found a Hydrocodone tablet on Evers, providing probable cause to search the vehicle.

Upon the search, officers found 3.62 grams of a methamphetamine and fentanyl mixture.

Evers was arrested on scene and is being charged with the following:

  • Possession With Intent to Distribute a Controlled Substance (Meth/Fentanyl)
  • Possession of a Controlled Substance (Hydrocodone)

He was taken to the Scottsboro City Jail, and then later transferred to the Jackson County jail.
