SCOTTSBORO, Al. (WDEF) —  A license plate reader alert helped Scottsboro police recover a stolen vehicle and to make an arrest.

On September 18, 2025, an officer with the Scottsboro Police Department (SPD) received an alert from the Flock Safety License Plate Reader (LPR) system.

The alert flagged a red 2015 Volkswagen Passat with a Tennessee dealer tag as stolen.

The officer quickly initiated a traffic stop near County Road 8 in Woodville.

According to the SPD, officers identified the driver as Jesse Glenn Ferrell.

Ferrell initially denied the vehicle was stolen, but police later confirmed it had been reported missing by a dealership in Smithville, Tennessee.

Investigators later learned that Ferrell had taken the car for a test drive and never returned it.

Ferrell was arrested and the vehicle was recovered without damage.

He was taken to the Jackson County Jail on a charge of first-degree receiving stolen property.
