Man faces federal charges for Chattanooga Masonic Center arson

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (WDEF) — A U.S. grand jury has now indicted a man who previously set fire to the Chattanooga Masonic Center.

Harwood now faces federal felony charges.

The grand jury indicted Kadum Harwood on two counts. The indictment says Harwood “maliciously damaged and destroyed… by means of fire and explosive materials, the Chattanooga Masonic Center.” The second count of the indictment was for traveling from Georgia to Tennessee to commit arson.

He also faces charges out of Hamilton County including harassment, burglary, vandalism/malicious mischief, arson and reckless endangerment.

The incident happened at 551 West 21st Street in Chattanooga on September 4, 2023. It happened around 2 a.m.

Authorities arrested 29-year-old Harwood after the incident, and then the jury indicted him on October 24, 2023.

The Chattanoogan reports that “Harwood earlier made direct threats on social media to burn the center on W. 21st Street.”
