Man pleads guilty after high-speed chase across state lines

DALTON, Ga. (WDEF) —  The suspect who was charged with running over an East Ridge Police Officer took a plea deal today.

Ta’Bious Wheat entered a guilty plea for one count of Fleeing and Attempting to Elude a Police Officer in connection with a high-speed chase.

The chase began July 1, 2024 in Marion County, Tennessee, and ended in Whitfield County, Georgia.

During the chase, Wheat hit officer Alan Resendiz at a high rate of speed.

Resendiz spent months in rehab and is continuing to learn how to walk again.

The chase ended when Georgia State Patrol Trooper, Cody Sturdivant, performed a PIT maneuver in Whitfield County.

Wheat reached speeds of 100-115 miles per hour, making unsafe lane changes, and driving in the emergency lane.

On August 29, a Whitfield County Grand Jury indicted Wheat on multiple charges, including six counts of fleeing and attempting to elude, theft by receiving stolen property, reckless driving, and driving under the influence.

Originally scheduled for arraignment on September 25, 2024, Wheat’s court appearance was then moved to October 23, 2024.

He received a 10-year sentence.

Wheat still faces outstanding charges in Tennessee.
