Man pleads to sex with a minor in North Carolina

MURPHY, North Carolina (WDEF) – A Murphy man has pleaded guilty to Statutory Sexual Offense with a victim under 15.

The case began in the fall of 2020, when the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office began looking for a missing juvenile female.

Investigators determined that C-J Payne was responsible.

After collecting phone and social media evidence, they got an indictment against him in 2021.

The case finally reached a conclusion last week with the guilty plea.

Payne was sentenced to 14-21 years, with credit for the almost two years he has already spent in jail.

Sheriff Derrick Palmer stated “As you can imagine numerous hours and resources were spent conducting this investigation. These cases demonstrate the professionalism of these individuals who worked cooperatively to bring about this outcome. We want to thank the Office of District Attorney Welch along with HAVEN Child Advocacy Center for their diligence and cooperation and team work in this investigation. We also pray for all in this and these types of investigations.”
