Man sentenced to life in wounding of teen at Memphis store

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) — A man who served 15 years in prison, including time on death row, in the killing of a Memphis police officer has been sentenced to life in prison without parole for shooting a teenager.

Media outlets report 41-year-old Timothy McKinney was sentenced Friday in Shelby County Criminal Court in the January 2014 shooting at a north Memphis convenience store. Prosecutors say a 14-year-old boy was wounded in the leg.

McKinney was convicted in the December 1997 murder of Memphis Police Officer Don Williams, who was working as a private security guard at a comedy club.

The conviction was overturned in 2010 by a state appeals court. Two retrials ended in hung juries before he pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and was sentenced in 2013 to time served.
