Marion County detective indicted for forgery, official misconduct
MARION COUNTY, Tenn. (WDEF) — A Marion County detective is facing felony charges following a TBI investigation into alleged document forgery.
Special agents launched an investigation into forgery suspicions as requested by District Attorney General Courtney Lynch.
Detective Robert Hargis, who served as the Sex Offender Registry Compliance Officer for the Marion County Sheriff’s Office, was responsible for collecting signatures from registered offenders to verify legal compliance.
According to the TBI, investigators discovered several falsified signatures on official sex offender documents.
On Tuesday, June 2, 2025, the Marion County Grand Jury returned a 10-count indictment charging Hargis with the following:
- Official Misconduct (2 counts)
- Tampering with Government Records (8 counts)
Hargis later turned himself into the Marion County Jail, and his bond was set at $25,000.
He has since bonded out.
