The Masters: A week unlike any other

AUGUSTA, Ga. (WDEF) – Today marks the beginning of Masters Week. The 80th of its kind.

Tiger Woods has already announced he won’t be playing this weekend and Fred Couples has pulled out of the tournament as well.

But that doesn’t mean there won’t be plenty of excitement on the historic course.

Reining champion Jordan Spieth has been a contention in every round he has every played at Augusta National. A Masters legend in the making perhaps.

No player has won consecutive Masters tournaments since Tiger in 2001 and 2002.

In the past several years, the shape of Augusta Nationals has proved advantageous to left handed players, so watch out for 2 time champ and favorite Bubba Watson and the always dangerous at Augusta Phil Mickelson as we head toward the weekend.

One player that would no doubt love to be playing this weekend this is 1977 and 1981 Masters champion Tom Watson. The 66 year old has announced that this will be his last Masters tournament, but he’s played well enough in recent years to think a weekend run could be in the cards.

Then there’s Jason Day and Rory McIlroy. Two of the game’s top players have faired well at times at Augusta National. Could this be the week they put it all together?

All in all, the 80th Masters Tournament, the pimento cheese, the azaleas, it’s hands down my favorite week of the year.
