McCallie Beats Baylor 34-28 in State Title Game Thriller
Chattanooga-(WDEF-TV) The Baylor-McCallie state title game clash lived up to the billing on Thursday night with McCallie winning 34-28. According to the telecast, 17-thousand tickets were sold for the championship bout at Finley Stadium. It was back and forth in the first quarter with the game tied at 14 at the end of the period. Then it got wild in the second quarter. Fourth and goal for McCallie from the Baylor three yard line, and the Blue Tornado went for it. Quarterback Jay St. Hilaire kept the ball and had it taken away by
Baylor’s Nelson McKnight. He proceeded to run 97 yards on a fumble return for a touchdown to make it 21-14 Baylor. But that big momentum shift didn’t faze McCallie. They added two more touchdowns before the half to go up 27-21 at the break. McCallie pushed the lead to 34-21 with another touchdown in the third quarter. Fourth quarter, and Baylor receiver Amari Jefferson scored on a 63 yard reception to make it 34-28. Jefferson had 210 yards receiving on the night. With 1:16 to play Baylor had a 4th and 12 from their own 48. Whit Muschamp completed a pass over the middle to Jefferson, but he was short of the first down, and McCallie celebrated a 34-28 triumph. McCallie quarterback Jay St. Hilaire paced the Blue Tornado attack with 309 yards passing.
