McCallie Guard Jr Clay Leading Blue Tornado to Parade of Victories

Chattanooga-(WDEF) By the time McCallie guard Jr Clay finishes up his senior year this season, he’ll likely help conclude the most successful four year run in Blue Tornado history.
With Clay running the point, McCallie has reached the state Final Four the last two seasons, and he’s a big reason why the Blue Tornado are off to a perfect start this season.
John Shulman rolled the dice in his first season as McCallie’s head coach, starting a freshman point guard in Jr Clay.
Said Shulman:”Jr was just kind of a special talent. He could pass it. He could score it. He could defend, and he wasn’t scared of anybody. He really looked like he was about 8-years-old.”
But Clay grew up fast.
Said Clay:”Against Ensworth I actually hit like a little buzzer at he end of the game against a big time kid. He’s actually at Tennessee now Jordan Bone, so when I hit that shot, it was like dang, it was crazy.”
Said Shulman:”But with Jr out there, he gives you a sense of calmness that I can just sit my tail-end down and let him take over the game. Let him coach the team. Let him win the game for us because he loves to win. He is a very competitive guy.”
With Clay at the point, McCallie has won over 80 games in just over three seasons.
Clay signed with Tennessee Tech, and Shulman believes the Golden Eagles got a steal.
Said Shulman:”Everybody was scared to take a chance on Jr. I mean he’s frail. He’s skinny. Let me just say. That’s a tough guy. That’s a tough guy. Toughness doesn’t come in your body or your size, it comes from within, and he’s got it. I mean he makes everybody better, and so they love the kid. Teachers love him. All the students love him. He is like Mr. McCallie.”
Clay was definitely not Mr. McCallie at home because he was schooled by his older sister Chadarryl, who played at GPS and later in college at VCU.
Said Clay:”We had a rim in the backyard. We’d go back there and play. She’d always win. She’d talk junk. She talked a lot of junk.”
Said Shulman:”When your sister is that great, you better be good, or you’re going to get blasted at school.”
