McCallie Names Assistant Steve Robison New Head Basketball Coach

(press release) McCallie School today named Steve Robison as its head varsity basketball coach. Mr. Robison has been an assistant coach on the team for the past four years. He succeeds David Conrady, who stepped down earlier this month after four seasons.

The announcement of Mr. Robison’s appointment was made by Head of School Lee Burns ‘87 in a called meeting of members of the basketball team.

“In his four years at McCallie, Coach Robison has demonstrated the attributes we were looking for in our new coach,” Mr. Burns said. “He has great relationships with his players and brings out the best in them. He’s a man of great integrity and character, a strong leader and fierce competitor with a high standard of excellence.”

Mr. Burns continues, “He has a great basketball mind and is a terrific teacher of the game. He understands the positive culture and character we expect in our team and what it takes to compete for championships.”

“I’m honored and humbled to have this opportunity, and I’m ready to get to work,” Mr. Robison said. “I’m eager to work with the great coaching staff that I have inherited to build a team that embodies the brotherhood, hard work and achievements that characterize McCallie athletics. We will be a spirited team with a dynamic style of play. We will build character and lifelong memories as we compete for championships.”

A native of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Mr. Robison came to Chattanooga in 1997 on a basketball grant-in-aid at Tennessee Temple University. There, he was a three time first-team All-American scoring more than 2,400 points. He holds a single season scoring record of 930 points. Mr. Robison joined the McCallie basketball staff four years ago as an assistant coach. He served as the Head Coach of Berean Academy from 2010-2017, guiding them to two state championships. He also has coached two AAU basketball teams.

He and his wife, Kelley, have a son, Parker, who is a rising junior at McCallie and a member of the basketball team, and two daughters, Klaire, a 7th grader and Kate, a 3rd grader.

“Steve was a natural choice for this position, the right man at the right time,” said Assistant Head of School Kenny Sholl. “A lot of members of the basketball team expressed their hopes that Steve would be named.”
