Chattanooga leaders recognize Sexual Assault Awareness Month
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (WDEF) – Members of the Hamilton County community came out in support of Sexual Assault Awareness during a proclamation ceremony.
April is Sexual Assault Awareness month. City and county leaders participated in this ceremony to acknowledge the need to fight against sexual abuse.
The ceremony was held downtown on Monday, April 8.
Chattanooga Police Chief Celeste Murphy attended, representing Mayor Tim Kelly.
Speakers discussed what actions are needed to take action against sexual abuse.
“One in ten children will be abused before their 18th birthday, and they are often hurt by someone they know. So, getting the word out about child sexual abuse generally can really help, because everyone in the state of Tennessee is a mandates reporter. What that means is if you they know or suspect that sexual abuse is happening to them, they can report it to the department of children’s services and they can get the service,” said Kristen McCallie, Executive Director of Children’s Advocacy Center.
Victims of sexual violence should call 911 or contact the crisis hotline.
