Mocs 7-Footer Jake Stephens Looking Like One of the Best Players in the Country

Chattanooga-(WDEF-TV) You can find one of the best college basketball players in America at McKenzie Arena.
It’s Mocs 7-foot-center Jake Stephens. The VMI transfer has lived up to the hype since his arrival, dominating play in the Southern Conference.

When it comes to Jake Stephens.
Said head coach Dan Earl:”The legend grows right?”
Quite literally.
Said Earl:”He has certainly grown since high school. He was maybe 6’8 and-a-half or something like that. He might have grown 3 and-a-half inches, so that certainly helps everything.”
Stephens wing span now stretches to a massive 7-feet 10-inches.
Couple that with a 280-pound frame, and opponents have a nightmare to deal with.
Said Earl:”People have to kind of pick their poison right. Like if you leave him alone, and he has had some games where people played him straight up, meaning man-on-man. He has had 30 plus points, and we’ve had some games where teams have doubled him or even tripled him, and he’s a willing passer.”
Said Stephens:”I mean that’s been one of the biggest improvements from last year to this year was just we want to get the ball in the post. We want to take advantage of those situations. That was definitely something we wanted to work on coming into this year, and I think that has been cool to kind of see that pay off.”
What’s amazing about a guy as big as Stephens. He can shoot the three.
He’s 7th in the SoCon in three-pointers made per game.
Said Earl:”You look at his release, and the way he pushes through. It’s not too movement. It’s a really pretty shot.”
Stephens is currently 4th in the nation in scoring at 22 points a game.
And he’s 10th in the nation in rebounding at ten boards a game.
So he’s averaging…averaging a double-double every game.
Said Earl:”Just trying to do the best I can do for the team whether it’s grab rebounds or score points. Pass the ball. Whatever it is.”
Coach Earl isn’t surprised by Stephens success.
Said Earl:”I lived at VMI right outside the football stadium, and I would catch him on the track at 8:30 at night after being in the weight room, and after workouts, and after playing with the team. Just running and conditioning on his own. He’s in the training room. He’s doing extra stretching. He does everything he can to be the best basketball player he can be.”
Reporter:”What’s the worst part of being 7-feet tall?”
Said Stephens:”Probably finding clothing to fit. It has been pretty difficult.”
