Mocs Backup QB Luke Schomburg Shining After Thrust Into Spotlight

Chattanooga-(WDEF-TV) Mocs coach Rusty Wright announced that starting quarterback Chase Artopoeus is done for the year, adding he’s undergoing surgery for his shoulder injury.
That means UTC will carry on in the playoffs with back-up quarterback Luke Schomburg, who has shown plenty of moxie in two career starts.

Said head coach Rusty Wright:”Your moment is going to come. Okay. You’ve got to be able to handle your moment when it shows up.”
And Luke Schomburg’s big moment was a doozy.
His first career start was against Alabama.
Said Schomburg:”I grew up watching that team play every Saturday. It was definitely cool to go back after the game and say that’s Bryant Denny Stadium, and I’m in Bryant Denny.”
Reporter:”How did you keep your wits about yourself in that Alabama game?”
Said Schomburg:”I kept saying to myself like it’s football. We’re playing football. These guys are 18, 19, 20, and 21 years-old just like we are.”
Then Schomburg’s next start was the Mocs opening round playoff game against Austin Peay where he did something special.
Said Mocs Sports Information Director Jim Horten:”Obviously the first quarterback in school history to win a road playoff game. Questions for Schomburg.”
Schomburg:”Really?”
Yeah Luke…it’s surprising.
Reporter:”I can’t imagine for an FCS quarterback throwing a kid into the fire any greater than hey kid, your first start is Alabama. Your second start is a playoff game.”
Said Wright:”I’d like to see it. You know I would. I would. I’d like to know if anybody else went through anything like that for sure. It was tough. No doubt it was tough.”
So what has been Schomburg’s secret?
Said Schomburg:”My confidence comes from my preparation. But also just having faith in God. I told myself before the game like this is a game. It’s football. And regardless of what the outcome is, my faith brings me confidence.”
Said Wright:”Doesn’t seem like the moment is too big for him. He just goes in there and plays. I think he has confidence in the guys around him, which helps that they are going to make the plays when the ball is put in their hands the right way.”

Mocs playoff drive continues Saturday at 1pm as they visit Furman in the Round of 16.
