Mocs Basketball Gets UAB Transfer Guard Jamal Johnson

(gomocs.com) CHATTANOOGA — The Chattanooga Mocs men’s basketball team has added another piece to the 2022-23 roster after acquiring UAB transfer and combo guard Jamal Johnson from the transfer portal, the program announced on Wednesday. Johnson carries one year of eligibility.

Johnson most recently played for the Blazers during this past 2021-22 season after transferring to Birmingham from Auburn. Johnson began his collegiate career at Memphis in 2017-18 after ranking as the No. 8 combo guard in the country by 247Sports during his scholastic career at Spain Park High School in Alabama.

“We are excited to welcome Jamal to the Chattanooga family. He has proven that he can make an impact at the high major college level,” said head coach Dan Earl.

“Jamal has great size for the guard position and is excellent three-point shooter. The Chattanooga community will love him both on and off the court.”

The 6-4 guard appeared in 27 games last year at UAB while making three starts in the process. Johnson ranked third on the team in three pointers made (30) and fourth in three-point percentage (37.0%) while reaching double digits in scoring four different times.

At Auburn, Johnson played in 54 games over the course of two seasons from 2019-21. He ranked third in SEC games only with a 2.4 threes per game average and scored a career-high 21 points against Arkansas on December 30, 2020. He became the first Auburn player in 15 years to post two consecutive 20-point games off the bench after following up the career performance with 20 against Texas A&M on January 2, 2021.

During his rookie season at Memphis in 2017-18, Johnson played in 34 games while making 27 starts for the Tigers. He averaged 6.9 points per game and scored 18 points on three different occasions including an 18-point, eight-rebound game against UConn on February 25, 2018.

Johnson is the son of former NBA First Round pick Buck Johnson who was taken 20th overall by Houston in 1986 and played for Houston from 1986-92 and Washington from 1992-93. He has two siblings in Alfonso III and Trey Johnson.
