Mocs Currently Second in the Nation With Nine Interceptions
Chattanooga-(WDEF-TV) When teams go back to pass against the Mocs, it seems there’s a good chance the Mocs will come away with the pick. Chattanooga is currently second in the nation with nine interceptions in just four games. They’re coming off a three-pick performance last Saturday against Western Carolina.
Mocs brought back a veteran secondary this season, and now we’re seeing the proof.
Said head coach Rusty Wright:”Between Camiron, Jordan Jones, (Brandon) Dowdell, and Jerell (Lawson). Those guys are playing at a high level. I mean they really are. Like older guys should play.”
Said defensive back Camiron Smith:”They’re all seniors. They’re experienced. They’re battle-tested. Those guys do a great job, which is always being in the area where the ball is.”
When you get nine picks in four games, you know the opposing quarterbacks are getting some heat.
Said Wright:”Good pressure is not always a sack. Just has to get loud. Just has to get loud around him. Has to move a little bit and get off his spot. And we’ve done that for the most part this year against a lot of folks.”
Brandon Dowdell leads the pick brigade. He has four or an average of one per game.
Said Smith:”I think it’s just him being a gnat. He has a knack for being around the ball. He’s just a great player.”
Wright:”He’s playing at a high level. He has practiced really well the last two or three weeks. He has been locked in. That group has been fun to watch.”
The whole Mocs defense is fun to watch. They lead the SoCon in total defense and rushing defense.
Reporter:”How would you describe the Mocs defense?”
Said Smith:”Smothering. I think we smother everybody. I don’t think there’s an offensive line that can block our D-line in the nation. Those guys do a great job.”
Said Wright:”You know Ty Boeck was the Southern Conference defensive player of the month. He doesn’t make all of those tackles if those four guys in front of him aren’t taking a bunch of things off of him and doing that.”
