Mocs Golf Team Advances to NCAA Championships

(gomocs.com) The Chattanooga Mocs punched their ticket Tuesday into the NCAA Championships with an impressive display shooting 21 under over 36 holes to leap from sixth to third. The Mocs turned in rounds of 276 (-12) and 279 (-9) to earn their fourth team trip to NCAA Finals.

The 21 under day gave the squad a 23-under total of 841, the lowest in school history at an NCAA Regionals. Chattanooga trailed only No. 4 Texas and host, No. 27 Texas A&M when the dust settled. No. 9 North Carolina was fourth at 19 under followed by the final qualifier, No. 16 Tennessee, at minus 18. No. 34 TCU was the first team out finishing at 13 under.

Quotable

“Going into it, we knew it was gonna be a long day. 36-hole days are long enough as it is, but then you add the pressure of regionals onto that…but this team is the grittiest team I’ve ever had. I felt like it was almost an advantage for us. Just the longer we can be out here, the better and let the other teams kind of falter. Really proud of them. They came out confident and free, which we didn’t do most of the year, but they’ve just grown and grown, and they continue to surprise and impress me. We just kind of rode it from there.” – Coach Blaine Woodruff on today’s rounds

“I got off to a good start. It was fortunate that I played well during the 36-hole day because you play one round and then you just keep it going in the next, but I was nervous going into it because a lot has built up to this. But I got the nerves out of the way on the first hole and just started rolling from there.” – Freshman Evan Rogers

“Coach (Ryan) Hogan and I felt we had a team from the very beginning. We just had to learn and grow a lot. We didn’t have much experience other than Cam having individual postseason experience, None of the other guys have ever been to a regional. We talked about how as much as we wanted to pretend it’s just another tournament. It isn’t. It’s bigger, and we were prepared for that. They played beyond their years, I guess is what I would say, and I’m so proud of them cause they all earned it. They put in the work for this.” – Woodruff on this accomplishment with such a young roster
