Mocs Golfer Garrett Engle Advances to Match Play at U.S. Amateur

(gomocs.com) CHATTANOOGA—Chattanooga Mocs senior Garrett Engle reached match play at the 124th United States Amateur. This year’s event is being played and Hazeltine National Golf Club in Chaska, Minn.

Engle shot a second 1 under round with a 2-under total of 140 to tie for 22nd. He was 1 over for stroke play, 2 over for the day, through 15 holes after starting on 10. He eagled the par 5 seventh and birdied the par 3 eighth to easily get into the top 64.

“I didn’t have my best stuff either day,” Engle shared via text. “I did well to kind of keep myself in it and then at the end of both rounds, I knew I had to do something. I had to try to will myself to make a move and to actually do that was pretty cool.

“Hopefully I can continue to do that the rest of the week.”

The finishes were special. He was 2 over through 15 both days. He birdies his way in on 16-18 on Monday before going eagle-birdie-par today. That’s 4 over through the first 15 cumulative and 6 under to close it out.

This is his second straight U.S. Am appearance. He is matched up with Henry Guan in the round of 64. Their match is scheduled for 9:30 a.m., starting on the first hole.

Engle already has a win this summer at the Dogwood Invitational. He also boasts runner-up endings at the Porter Cup and Beaver Bend Invitational.
