Mocs Happy Training Camp Weight Ritual in Rear View Mirror
Chattanooga-(WDEF-TV) The training camp portion of fall workouts is over for the Chattanooga Mocs.
That means the players won’t have to sweat and strain through a brutal, post practice, weight-training drill.
After a two hour practice in the sun for the Mocs…time for another grueling grind.
Said head coach Rusty Wright:”Back in the day in the NFL. Way back they would lift after practice right there on the field. They’d say throw your cigarette down and grab a dumb bell. Here we go. We’re going to work.”
Pulling a heavy sled of weights for 100 yards..that’s not work. That’s insane.
Said linebacker Alex Mitchell:”Power sleds over there. Those things will kill your legs after any practice. It gets you going though.”
And if the weighted sled doesn’t get you going.
How bout this beauty.
Care to guess how much that bag weighs?
150-pounds.
Said Mitchell:”We usually call those 150-pound bags a slog. Those things are brutal.”
Said receiver Sam Phillips:”You can put it on your shoulders. Bear hug it. Put it on one shoulder. I put it on both shoulders. I feel like that’s a little easier. It’s a lot o stress on your back. We’ve got to go down and back. And then down and back. On that second trip that’s the one that gets you. I’m not going to lie.”
Even coach Wright hoisted a slog.
And he probably won’t do it again.
Said Wright:”It’s hard. I got a big bruise on the inside of my arm from picking one up. Yeah it’s not a lot of fun, especially when you’re sweating and your hot and tired.”
Getting stronger now.. That’s the goal of the post-practice weight workout.
Said Phillips:”It’s going to get us ready for the season for when that fourth quarter comes. You’re tired. Your body wants to shut down, but your brain tells you to keep going.”
Said Wright:”That’s the one thing for all of us as people. Our mind will stop us from doing a lot more things than our body will let us. Our body will go a lot further than our mind will ever let it.”
