Mocs Have Sense of Urgency Ahead of Big Dance Opener With Illinois

Pittsburgh, PA-(WDEF-TV) The Chattanooga Mocs were very serious during their press conference Thursday ahead of their NCAA Tournament game against Illinois. This is a business trip for them — especially Southern Conference player of the year Malachi Smith, who said he hasn’t taken much time to enjoy the Madness yet.

The Mocs are in a unique position, being the first team to have punched their ticket a week and a half ago. Head coach Lamont Paris says the team took two full days off and then dialed up the practices last week. Meanwhile Smith said this team is razor focused — which they need to be considering Illinois has won its first round games in the last three straight tournaments.

Said Smith: “We have a sense of urgency to us, a mentality to come here and continue to just keep doing what we’re doing and win games. We’re not just happy to be here. We’re here to make a statement. And to beat a team like Illinois, you need to have all your Is dotted and Ts crossed and stuffed.”

The Mocs face Illinois Friday at 6:50pm, and the game will be televised on TNT.
