Mocs Hoping to Lock Down the Turnovers and Lock Up the Wins
Chattanooga-(WDEF) Chattanooga’s season of promise hasn’t gone quite like they expected.
The Mocs loss to ETSU over the weekend doomed their chances of defending their SoCon regular season title.
Chattanooga was picked to win the SoCon title this year, but they’re currently in fourth place with a 10-5 league record.
Said head coach Matt McCall:”I think this team from an expectation standpoint, it has been hard for them. It really has. I don’t think a lot of our players really understood just how difficult this year would be. Every single night stepping on the floor getting other teams best shots. And then it doesn’t go well at certain points in the game and at times it snowballed for us.”
Maybe the Mocs haven’t been at their best, but it’s not like the season has been a disaster.
Said McCall:”You don’t have Greensboro down 40 at home without being a really, really good team. You don’t beat Tennessee on the road without being a really, really good team. You don’t beat Marshall in here without being a really, really good team, so we’ve proven what we’re capable of doing.”
From here on out, look for Coach McCall to stress one thing.
Said McCall:”I think it’s the turnovers”.
Said guard Rodney Chatman:”Yesterday in practice, we had punishment for turnovers. That can really be in the back of our mind when we’re fixing to make a play and know we could get in trouble.”
Said McCall:”We don’t shoot a great percentage behind the three-point line, but we’re still making seven or eight a game, which is still good. But when you turn it over, that’s eliminating possessions and eliminating shots you can get up to the basket. Those are things we have to really look at. I think another thing. We’ve got to run more. We’ve got to get out on the break and convert in transition.”
McCall has no complaints with his defense.
UTC is allowing 68-points a game, second best scoring defense in the SoCon.
Said Chatman:”Championships are won by playing defense, so if we can keep that up, we’ve still got a shot.”
Said McCall:”There’s still a chance and an opportunity for us to play in the NCAA Tournament. That’s the goal. And we need to start playing better right now.”
