Mocs Hoping to Repeat as SoCon Softball Tournament Champs

Chattanooga-(WDEF-TV) The Mocs softball team staggers into the SoCon tournament this week in Chattanooga with a 7-11 league record.
As a result, UTC enters the tournament as the sixth seed, but they’re playing with the mind-set of the top seed.

Mocs hope to be cheering again this year after claming the SoCon tourney title last year as a three seed.
Said pitcher Brooke Parrott:”We were just giving our best last year, and it’s nice to know that we canjust reflect on that.”
Said infielder Emily Coltharp:”Really just comes down to who is going to fight the most. I think that it really doesn’t matter what seed you are. Anybody can beat anybody on any given day, and I’ve never been more confident in our team that we are going to be able to get it done.”
Mocs will fight, but Coach Reed wouldn’t mind some luck too.
Said head coach Frank Reed:”We lost seven preseason games to walk-offs. So I’m now sure why that has happened to us. Just can’t catch a break.”
Mocs have only two seniors, but they might have the oldest player in the league in Emily Coltharp.
Said Coltharp:”A lot of people call me ‘Elderly Emily’, so it’s a little embarrassing at times, but yeah, I feel it. Yeah it definitiely gets to you. 23-years-old and still playing softball.”
Said Parrott:”Emily is like the best leader that we can have. She has been here for five years now. She has such a good attitude, and she’s a good pick-me-up girl, so we love Emily.”
Chattanooga will have home turf advantage with the new turf at Frost Stadium.
Said Reed:”It’s going to be hot. We have not experienced the turf at this time of the day at 3 o’clock and 85-degrees tomorrow maybe. It’s going to be tough. It’s going to be hard on every team.”
Said Parrott:”As far as pitching I don’t mind it. You’re not digging a hole in the dirt, so it kind of just stays the same, so that’s nice.”
This is what the Mocs are playing for.
Reed estimates he has 13 SoCon Championship rings.
Said

Reed:”I always say if you are able to get one, you get it like you are never going to get another one. That’s whay we hope for.”

Mocs open against third seeded Furman at 3pm Wednesday at Frost Stadium.
